Many people both professionals and business owners even today think that ERP is a software that is used for taking care of accounting tasks. As a reason many small and medium scale businesses fail to realise the full potential of an ERP software and are stuck in their business without being able to grow.
This misconception is mainly because many of the earlier ERPs were originally built as an application for finance and inventory management. Naturally, the sales team focused on selling it to companies focusing on the key pain point which is managing their accounting tasks. Accounting or Finance team was (and still is) the most critical department as it provides financial reports to the Public, Government and Financial Institutions. So any solution that solved their problem became critical.
Think about this- If we went 25 years back and pitched a solution for interlinking all the departments such that it would simplify their jobs. Would the businesses have bought into it? Probably not. Because even the bigger businesses used it only for accounting, and the smaller business were doing just fine with manual practices.
Fast Forward to today’s business scenario – AI is transforming business operation at every level. Therefore, it is no longer enough to have the ERP just for accounting, instead it should be used to its full potential, which is, to become the business nervous system keeping every part connected and responsive.
